An original watercolour and mixed media painting on art paper by Philip Bawcombe (1906-2000) who became famous for his series of books containing his paintings of South African architectural landmarks, including Johannesburg (1973), Kimberley (1976), and Potchefstroom (1988). He also illustrated dust jackets eg. "Not without Honour, the Life and writings of Olive Schreiner" by Vera Buchanan-Gould.

H. F. Oppenheimer hailed Philip Bawcombe's Kimberley (1976) as capturing "the spirit and portraying the fabric of old Kimberley," announcing that De Beers had acquired the original collection for permanent display.
