The story of the shipwreck of the Dunedin Star (not named in this edition) and the subsequent ill-fated attempts to rescue survivors, by ship, tug and air before, finally, a successful overland expedition was mounted. Marsh was a legendary journalist and shipping reporter and interviewed both survivors and rescuers to obtain first hand accounts. The first edition was published in September 1944. In the preface Marsh recounts that between the first edition being published and this edition two months later a number of the survivors and rescuers had contacted him and so this edition did contain some amendments and small additions and is thus a more complete account than when the book first appeared. In later (post-war) editions the vessel could be named.
