Hendrik van der Bijl (1887-1948) was a South African electrical engineer and industrialist and is regarded as one of the greatest South Africans for his contribution to the country's development. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the South African electricity utility company Eskom and the South African Steel and Iron Corporation ISCOR. He played an important role in the industrialisation of South Africa and internationally he made a great contribution to intercontinental telephony.
