'20th Century South African bank notes have a justifiable claim to be one of the most important groups of world issues. From a numismatic interest alone, they offer the inducement of historical interest, large variety, relative easy availability, and the fact that most notes are still fully negotiable. Many collectors throughout the world specialise in notes of the British Commonwealth, thus qualifying all our notes issued before 31st May, 1961 when South Africa became a Republic.

In preparing this work, I found it appropriate to start with the notes of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). Some of these issues are amongst the most sought after notes in the world and are therefore becoming difficult to find. It must be remembered that they are of particular historical significance both in South Africa and in England.' - from the Introduction
