'The period of great colonisations is over. But the colonial question is of the utmost importance, especially with regards to the history of the 19th century. This is evident in this history and memoir book about the former South West African protectorate of the German Empire.
From 1905 to 1914, the author worked for the German government in South West Africa as an advisor and representative of the government. From his own experience of extensive travels and his long standing engagement with historical sources, he is able to give his readers a clear idea of the history of South West Africa: from the conquest of the land by the merchant Adolf Lüderitz to the surrender of the Colonial Troops in July 1915. In between lie the Herero and Hottentot uprisings, the diamond discoveries of 1908, the expansion of the administration, and - as the culmination of thirty years' work - the national exhibition of 1914.' - editor's note
The author, Dr. Oskar Hintrager (1871-1960) was a German jurist who fought as a volunteer on the Boer side during the Anglo-Boer War. He joined the Free State artillery and spent four months in the field, taking part in General Christiaan de Wet's campaign in the Transvaal. From 1905-14 he was a government employee in German South West Africa.
