Relies upon letters written by Thomas Philipps to his family in Britain up until 1830. Thereafter the records of the Graham's Town Journal and the farm diary of James Collett provided information. Tabular information includes: Crop yields from 1822 to 1824, wool exports through Port Elizabeth 1830 to 1832, census of sheep in various frontier districts 1834 to 1841. and butter exports from Algoa Bay 1834 to 1845. Also numerous appendices with data on other agricultural outputs. Extensive bibliography.
