From 1987 to 1992, the southern African birding public, whether amateur or professional, was involved in one of the most enthusiastic and comprehensive field projects ever undertaken in Africa. Every birding outing was an exciting contribution to the Southern African Bird Atlas Project, known to everyone as SABAP, the product of which you now have the privilege of holding in your hands. This extraordinary cooperative venture incorporates data from six southern African countries, includes millions of records, and uses the most advanced computer technology in their analysis to provide the world with an atlas of unsurpassed detail and clarity.
BirdLife South Africa (formerly the Southern African Ornithological Society) played a leading role in steering the project and publishing these volumes and, together with national ornithological associations in the other five participating nations, provided the bulk of the workers to collect and process the data, The ADU deserves high commendation for its unstinting efforts at completeness, accuracy, care and professionalism in the production of this magnificent work. It is a research tool of immense value to conservationists, historians, ornithologists and birders, and will remain a benchmark into the indefinite future.
