The Empire Exhibition of 1936 "was held on what is now the University of the Witwatersrand’s West Campus and was... a triumphant spectacle aimed at promoting Johannesburg and the Union of South Africa"
Donald Bain " travelled with ǂKhomani community members from the southern Kalahari to the Empire Exhibition in Johannesburg. This was an attempt to spread awareness about their plight as the land that they lived on had been declared The Gemsbok National Park in 1931, reducing their access to natural resources."
Copies of this catalogue were sold at the exhibition for 1 shilling sixpence, to raise funds for the cause.
The photographs in this catalogue were taken by Donald Bain, but importantly some of the photographs for Duggan-Cronin's "The Bantu Tribes of South Africa" were taken at the exhibition.
