A first edition of this fascinating uncommon work. Rose's fascinating treatise on the metallurgy of gold, part of a series on metallurgy issued by the Royal School of Mines. Supplying the reader with a succinct summary of the existing condition of the metallurgy of gold at the tail end of the Victorian era. Looking at the proprieties of gold and its alloys, chemistry of the compounds of gold, depp placer deposits, quartz crushing in the stamp battery, chlorination, the refining of gold bullion, and more. Illustrated with 69 in-text illustrations throughout and many diagrams, tables, formulas, extensive bibliography, and index. Including "Stamp battery practice in the Transvaal" (the account mainly based on information supplied by Mr. S.H.Farra M.I.C.E., F.G.S., M.I.M.E., of Johannesburg - Apendix B.). This is an extremely rare copy of this precious work, hard to find even in National and University Libraries - and the only complete first edition's copy selling on internet.

Original publisher's red cloth binding; Text in English; Collation complete - Title page, [5], vi-xvi, 462 pages, 32 pages, with 69 b/w in-text illustrations and many diagrams, tables, formulas, extensive bibliography, and index; Binding is tigt and firm, with usual shelf wears mostly to the extremities. Spine and extremities bumped, spine with a few minor discoloration dots. Joints and hinges are whole, strong and secure. Ex-library label with number to the upper left corner of the front board and label to the front pastedown. Text block/pages are clean and intact, no foxing or markings throughout, with slight yellowing, a few pages slightly dog eared. A sound copy.
