"The publishing of Baines' journals revealed his adventures in Rhodesia from 1869-1872. Baines and his comrades mined the goldfields at Tati and provide important insight to the relationships between Europeans and King Lobengula of the Matabele. There are numerous hunting incidents throughout this work with considerable mention of sport after elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, sable, eland, wildebeest and many other antelope species. Wallis' introduction and notes are both erudite and helpful".
