Horace Walpole (1717–1797) was an English writer, historian, politician, and antiquarian.
He is best known for his pioneering Gothic novel, "The Castle of Otranto," published in 1764, which is considered the first Gothic novel and introduced supernaturalism and mystery into romance literature. Walpole was also noted for his extensive letters, art historical work, and as a revivalist of Gothic architecture.

The full name of Horace Walpole was Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford. He is better known by the name Horace Walpole, which he preferred to use instead of Horatio. He was born on September 24, 1717, and held the title Earl of Orford later in life after inheriting it in 1791.

In "The Opposition" written in 1763, Walpole, as a Whig politician, wrote political commentary reflecting his opposition to the prevailing government policies of the time.
