The Chartwell Edition is a corrected and the first illustrated version of Churchill's history. It was issued in two bindings - a red cloth and a far more scarce blue quarter leather binding. It includes colour frontispieces, black-and-white plates, and maps.
The "De-Luxe" binding features quarter blue morocco leather on the spine with gilt lettering and decoration, blue cloth boards, blue-stained top edges, and marbled endpapers.
Hard covers in good condition except for Volumes 3 and 4 have a binding glitch on the half-title page through to the title page. Otherwise a very good copy of the scarce blue 1/4 leather edition.
Each book weights between 1 and 2 kg so the total weight is in the region of 10kg.
Winston S. Churchill's The Second World War is the definitive, history of World War II, universally acknowledged as a magnificent historical reconstruction and an enduring work of literature. The Nobel Prize in Literature 1953 was awarded to Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill "for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values"
From Britain's darkest and finest hour to the great alliance and ultimate victory, the Second World War remains the most pivotal event of the twentieth century. Winston S. Churchill was not only the war's greatest leader, he was the free world's singularly eloquent voice of defiance in the face of Nazi tyranny, and it's that voice that animates this six-volume history.
Remarkable both for its sweep and for its sense of personal involvement, it begins with The Gathering Storm; moves on to Their Finest Hour, The Grand Alliance, The Hinge of Fate, and Closing the Ring; and concludes with Triumph and Tragedy.
Preface to the Chartwell Edition by Winston Churchill:
Now a special edition is being published illustrated for the first time, in which all those first minor issues have been corrected. I hope that these new volumes will find as much favour as the previous ones seem to have done. Winston Church Chartwell October 1 1954.
