Bryce traveled from the Volga River and the steppes of Imperial Russia, through the Caucasus Mountain range, and then along the northern Turkish coast. He reports on conditions in the region, the native peoples such as Georgians and Armenians, the landscape and natural history. He ultimately reached Mount Ararat which he climbed, the continued on to Constantinople (Istanbul).
Original green cloth with gilt titles and gilt vignette of Mount Ararat on the front cover. Original dark brown endpapers with inner hinges starting, and the bookplate of the Palestine Exploration Fund on the front pastedown. Illustrated with a frontispiece and a colored two-page map of the region. Binding tight and firm, corners rubbed.
