vii, 205 pages: illustrations, portraits (one as frontispiece), drawings. Cloth with gilding. Ownership inscription in pen (Dublin, January 1901) on front free endpaper.

Cavanagh arrived in Cape Town where he found a 'high scale of civilization maintained' before heading on to Barberton where he set up business. Thereafter he travelled through Johannesburg, Natal, Rhodesia and Swaziland. His views are interesting since he looked at events both in England and Africa from an American's viewpoint and continually compares how differently things are done the 'British way'. See SABIB, volume 1, page 489 where just 8 copies are listed.
