xviii, 503 pages: illustrations, colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, portraits, colour folding map. (Heritage series; volume 5). Cloth with gilding, some scarring to endpapers, dust wrapper. Originally published in 1893. Number 296 an edition limited to 2000 copies.

The first nine chapters are devoted to Selous' experiences with Boers and tribesmen while engaged in hunting expeditions in order to collect specimens of fauna. (Selous sent many specimens to the Natural History Museum in London. There is a bust of Selous overlooking the main exhibition hall, with a plaque referring to him as a hunter, explorer and naturalist). The later part includes an account of the Chartered Company's expedition to Mashonaland, in which Selous played a prominent part. See Mendelssohn, vol. 2, p. 300. Selous was killed by a sniper at Beho-Beho in German East Africa in 1917.
