Czech (Dr. Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 – 1999, page 276:43, Bailey arrived at Grantville in 1884 and proceeded into the interior of the Congo on an expedition of sport and exploration. Initially he hunted gorilla, then proceeded up the Rembo River where hippopotamus and leopard where hunted. In the Massabe Swamp, buffalo and antelope were bagged. He then travelled along the Kwilu River where elephants were taken. While in the bush, he met Herbert Ward who would later take part in Henry Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. At Stanley Pool, and later near Brazzaville, hippos and elephant were collected. Bailey returned to England but upon hearing of Stanley's proposed 'flying column' to rescue Emin in Equatoria, he sailed back to the Congo. Near Lukungu there were additional hippo and elephant hunting adventures. Bailey's nom de Plume meant 'elephant smasher' in the native dialect.
