The author, Major-General Sir John Frederick Maurice KCB (1841-1912), was a senior British Army Officer, chiefly remembered for his military writing.

He served as private secretary to Sir Garnet Wolseley in the Ashanti Campaign of 1873–1874 and was his intelligence officer in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. During the subsequent campaign to capture Sekukuni, King of the Bapedi, Maurice demonstrated gallantry on the battlefield and was shot in the chest.
