Translated from the original Portuguese by Mariana Monteiro.
Diocleciano Das Neves (1829-1883) was born in Portugal. He died tragically at Bembe near the mouth of the Limpopo river.
He was appointed as head of the customs office in Lourenco Marques in 1855. In 1859 he entered a new phase in his life and became a hunter and trader. He was a fierce opponent of slave trade but was in favour of the ivory trade.
This is an account of his hunting in the Transvaal where he hunted, Elephant, Buffalo and Lion, this enabled him to continue his trade in ivory. His trade route passed through what is today the Kruger National Park.
