A most remarkable item of historical importance, an autograph letter in manuscript, signed by Roger Casement, one of the leading figures in the Irish Nationalist revolt in Dublin, the Easter Rising and known for his Black Diaries that exposed him as homosexual, is coming up on auction. 

The item is of particular interest because of the 1916 Easter Rising commemorations which are planned for next year in Ireland.

The renowned human rights campaigner, Sir Roger Casement, was hanged in 1916 for his involvement in the Irish Nationalist revolt in Dublin - the Easter Rising.

The Antiquarian online auction, which started yesterday at www.antiquarianauctions.com, is offering a book that “was never written to be read but to be seen”.

This is how author Graeme Greene describes The Third Man in the preface to the book.

Accordingly, the book is dedicated to Carol Reed, the director of the film of the book, which is now regarded as a classic.

The movie, released in 1949, is also regarded as a classic and “is frequently listed as one of the best movies of all time”.

The orchid is the royal flower<br><small>Sander’s Elephant Folio of Reichenbachia on auction</small>

A 125-year-old bound set of life-size orchid paintings, Reichenbachia by Frederick Sander will be offered on Auction #42.

Altogether 192 orchid species are reproduced by chromolithography from original paintings by Henry G Moon with 434 pages of accompanying descriptive text (in English, French and German) and line drawings.

Books dealing with turbulent preiods in South Africa history, the 1922 miner’s revolt and the attempts of the Ossewa Brandwag (OB) to foment unrest in SA during the Second World War, are among items on the Antiquarian Books online sale that started yesterday on www.antiquarianauctions.com/auction.

One book, Agter Tralies en Doringdraad, deals with the history of the OB, which resisted SA’s entry into the war and whose members were interned for their beliefs.

First, Four Gospels of the Lord Jesus Christ, one of the supreme achievements of this Press and also undoubtedly Eric Gill's masterpiece of book illustration.
