This selection comprises the author's most complete autobiography and two short books deriving from two of his favourite European countries, Ireland (home of his mother's family), and the Netherlands. All are first editions.

(1) Die Laaste Afrikaanse Boek. 2002. The title derives from the author's expectation that this would be his last book after a publishing career of some 35 years (not so), and that the turn of the 21st century would be the end of an era in which Afrikaans non-fiction books would be able to be published commercially. He believed that this book, as well as J C Steyn's and J C Kannemeyer's then recent biographies of N P van Wyk Louw and Leipoldt would be more or less the end of such books.

  • The division is into the places where he lived - Trompsburg at the beginning and near the end of his life, Bloemfontein for four periods totalling 11 years, Paarl, Pretoria twice, Johannesburg, Amsterdam, Glasgow, and, longest of all, Cape Town for 16 years.
  • 683 pp + 24 inserted pp of b/w photographs (notably by David Goldblatt and Chris Jansen) printed on cream art paper.
  • 225 x 180 x 40 mm; 1.6 kg.

(2) Uit die Iers. 1970. Afrikaans translations of Middle Age Irish poems.

  • 220 x 140 mm. Green illustrated dustjacket with gold lettering. Green cloth-boards. viii + 59 pp.

(3) Die Noorderlig. 1975. Set in the Netherlands but applicable to South Africa as well, this is a short story about a relationship.

  • 220 x 140 mm. Grey illustrated dustjacket with white lettering. Grey cloth-boards. 114 pp.
