Sammelband of 1863 Draft Riots in New York pamphlets

[The Draft Riots in New York City, 13-16 July 1863]. A sammelband, including one lengthy pamphlet, two shorter pamphlets, two extracts from periodicals, and the text of four of Tousey’s broadsides in an unrecorded form. [New York: 1863-1867]. Various works in one volume, octavo (8 ¾ x 5 5/8 inches; 223 x 143mm). Contemporary half morocco, spine titled in gilt ‘Draft Riots in N. York. July 1863’ (covers detached).

A contemporary selection of the works which record events in New York during the Draft Riots of July 1863.

Comprising:

David BARNES. The Draft Riots in New York. July, 1863. The Metropolitan Police: their services during the riot week. Their honorable record. New York: Baker & Godwin, printers & publishers, 1863. Pp. [1-]6-117[-120]. Original upper and lower paper-wrapper covers bound at front and rear (light surface damage to upper wrapper). Rare: the first edition of the best contemporary account of the riots: it was published just two months after the events described and is drawn from police reports, articles in the New York Times, and the testimony of eye-witnesses.

Sinclair TOUSEY (printer and publisher) – “A Democratic Workingman” [i.e. TOUSEY ?]. [Reduced versions of four broadsides issued by Tousey] New York: circa Sept. 1863 – Feb. 1864. 4 works printed recto and verso of two octavo leaves. Comprising: Don't Unchain the Tiger! … New York, July 24, 1863. [No imprint, but S. Tousey]; A Challenge! … New York, Aug. 25, 1863… Sold by S. Tousey, 121 Nassau St.; White Slaves… New York, Sept. 26th, 1863 … Sold by S. Tousey, 121 Nassau St.; An Abolition Traitor … New York, Aug. 29, 1863. Sold by S. Tousey, 121 Nassau St. Apparently unrecorded in this form: OCLC notes that with William Oland Bourne, Tousey “had written and distributed 9 handbills [or broadsides] during the Draft Riot”. The present texts are a match for four of these very rare Republican propaganda broadsides. The imprints of the present works appear to indicate that they were published before Feb. 1864 when Tousey founded the ‘American News Company’.

[Edward B. FREELAND]. [caption title:] 'The Great Riot', being eleven pages extracted from The Continental Monthly, [New York: September 1863]. Vol. IV, no. III, pp.302-312. A contemporary analysis of the immediate and underlying causes of the Riots, also offering some potential answers to the problems the Riots had highlighted.

[COUTANT & BAKER (publishers)]. [wrapper title:] The Bloody Week! Riot, Murder & Arson, containing a full account of this wholesale outrage on life and property, accurately prepared from official sources, by Eye Witnesses, with portraits of “Andrews,” the leader and “Rosa” his Eleventh Street Mistress. New York: Coutant & Baker, [undated but 1863]. Pp.[1-]2-32. Original blue upper and lower paper-wrapper covers bound at front and rear, the upper cover incorporating a ‘portrait’ of Andrews, the lower cover with an image of ‘Rosa’. Excellent condition: contemporary reporting.

[Ellen LEONARD]. [caption title:] 'Three Days of Terror', being nine pages extracted from Harper's New Monthly Magazine, [New York: January 1867]. Vol. XXXIV, no. 200, pp.225-233. This eye-witness account includes the rescue of Col. later Brev. Brigadier-General Edward Jardine. He subsequently published this article as a pamphlet "Three Days Reign of Terror, or, the July Riots in 1863, in New York City".

[Vincent COLYER, and others]. Report of the Committee of Merchants for the Relief of Colored People, suffering from the late riots in the city of New York. New York: George A. Whitehorne, 1863. Pp.[1-]4-48. Original oatmeal-colored upper wrapper bound at front. "A report of the measures to raise funds to aid African Americans who lost their homes and livelihoods in recent mob violence, together with testimonials from those attacked and a list of contributors" (OCLC). OCLC 3898940
