First edition in English of Guillaume Ranchin’s “Revision du Concile de Trente” translated by Gerard Langbaine.
An informed Protestant view of the Council of Trent, which was held by the ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic church in three phases (1545-7; 1551-2; and 1562-3). It is now generally seen as the most important event in the Roman Catholic response to the Protestant Reformation.
The author Guillaume Ranchin, a French protestant (not a Roman Catholic as stated on the title), first published his ‘Revsion du Concile de Trente’ in 1600. The present work, the first English translation, is the work of Gerard Langbaine (1609-1658) “an English academic and clergyman, known as a scholar, royalist, and Provost of Queen’s College, Oxford” (wikipedia).
