A classic illustrated work, with plates by the author and frontispiece by his father, the famous landscape and portrait painter Sir John Everett Millais. The author travelled extensively in Africa, including the Nile and South Africa and also in North America. He published numerous works on the big game of both continents and on the game birds and animals of the British Isles. The above work is famous for its evocative descriptions of the Veldt and the illustrations of big game, and life on the trail. The large folio format, superb illustrations and general quality of book production all combine to create a celebration of the life of adventure in late nineteenth century South Africa.
Folio, original cream cloth, with pictorial design of antelope heads and title on front board, top edge gilt; First Edition. x + 236 pages, with 13 electro etchings, 12 full-page plates from drawings and numerous text illustrations; invisibly rebacked and recased with new endpapers, slightly rubbed, a little spotting to etched plates, otherwise a very good copy.
The twelve etchings, 49 full-page engravings, and 88 illustrations in the text, form an artistic production, while the frontispiece, contributed by Sir J.E. Millais, "The Last Trek", is perhaps the most beautiful illustration connected with South African art.
