For the first five years in the wilds he hunted with a rifle. Thereafter practically all his hunting was done with a camera, on foot, and in like manner to stalking game with a gun. He much preferred wild life photography to the killing of wild animals, and A Breath of the Wilds is therefore far more a record of personal observations of the habits and characteristics of wild animals in Africa than of the actual shooting of them.
