Gilbert BURNET (1643-1715).
A Discourse of the Pastoral Care. London: printed by R.R. for Ric. Chiswell, 1692. Octavo (7 3/8 x 4 ½in; 187 x 114mm). Pp. [i-xvi]; i-xxxiv; 1-252[-254]. With half-title at the beginning, and 2pp. advertisements at the end. Early 19th-century purple half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine in six compartments with semi-raised bands, brown morocco lettering-piece, the other compartments with repeat decoration in gilt (very light scuffing to extremities).
First edition of one of Burnet’s most accomplished works – a very nice copy in a fine, but later binding. The author describes the function and character of the clerical profession: the author’s intention was to encourage dissenters back to the Church of England following the introduction of the Toleration Act.
