A hallmarked silver circular pocket fly box, gilded interior divided into six compartments, with air-holes to flush hinged lid.
Diameter: 4 3/8in; 110mm.
Hallmarked for Sheffield, 1929, with Asprey’s ‘A & Co Ltd’ maker’s mark.
Condition: used, so, some small dents and scratches, the gilding to the lid is perhaps a trifle rubbed. Still a beautiful relic from a golden age for British fly-fishing and British luxury goods.
An unusual George V silver angler’s accessory, from one of the most famous of all 20th-century purveyors of 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment’ (Asprey’s advertisement), they continued with a note that their mission was ‘and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.'
The size of the box indicates that this was intended for the trout fisherman. The layout of the box suggests that outer ring was for leaders and casts, the four shaped compartments within the ring for favorite flies, whilst the central circular compartment with associated air-holes hints at the desperation of a fish-less day on the fly: the almost-guaranteed but frowned-upon expedient of using live bait is catered to (a gentleman would always leave this empty?)
