George Washington WILSON, Francis FRITH, ROBINSON & THOMPSON, & others (photographers).
A mid-19th century album with 68 later-19th century photographs, of vaious locations in the United Kingdom, including Ettington Park in Warwickshire; Sunbury Lock, on the River Thames, in Surrey; 'Moreville' in Warwickshire (probably Morville Gardens, Sherbourne Manor); and a selection of picturesque Scottish views. [Various places: circa 1865-1900?].
Folio (13 7/8 x 10in; 353 x 254mm). 69 photographs (various sizes, 13 3/4 x 9 5/8in; 349 x 244 and smaller), these look to be a mixture of albumen prints and salt prints with additional albumen. (Some light fading, some leaves removed). Purple morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, gilt-metal clasp with integral lock (stamped 'T.H. Bull paten[t]'), with original key, gilt turn-ins, patterned endpapers, gilt edges (binding worn, split to upper joint and front inner hinge, extremities rubbed). Provenance: George Hodson (2pp. ALS, dated Feb 26th 1842, written to accompany the gift of the present album to an unnamed recipient 'Dear Sir').
An interesting collection of photographs, the vast majority, topographical or architectural. Of particular importance (if only locally) is the group of 13 anonymous photographs of the newly built Ettington Park, Warwickshire (called 'Eatington' or 'Lower Eatington' at the time). There are also a nice pair of images of Sunbury Lock (on the Thames) and a small group of 3 images of 'Moreville'. The more generalized views include 7 images from Frith; 9 from G.W. Wilson and one each from Robinson & Thompson and J. Valentine.
