[9], xii-xxxxiv, [3], 2-386, [3]; [11], 2-413, Dark brown cloth with a native man and an Arabic design embossed on the front board, the mausoleum at Mortlake embossed on the rear board, gold lettering on the spine; red top stains. Dark green endpapers and paste downs. Each volume includes one chromolithographic plate.

Second edition of Burton's account of his last major expedition to West Africa in 1863. Burton travelled to Dahomey (Benin) for the purpose of establishing trade relations and to persuade the King Gelele to abandon his practices of slave-trading and human sacrifice
