Neue Deutsche Biographie (https://www.deutsche biographie.de/sfz47453.html#ndbcontent), Laimbeckhoven (Chinese name Nan Huai-jen Wo-te), Gottfried Xaver von. First edition of a German-language account of the Jesuit voyage to China, with both maps. Laimbeckhoven, a Viennese Jesuit, was ordained in 1735 and left to join the China mission. The book covers his sea voyage of 1735–38 from Genoa to Macao and ends with his arrival there. Its title mentions astronomical and geographical observations, and the two maps were drawn by the author himself.
It gives a vivid impression of the decline of Portuguese sea and colonial power, of the slave trade on the East African coast, and of Dutch dominance in the Far East. It also records the Jesuit community in Beijing at the end of the 1730s, including the astronomers Ignaz Kögler and Augustin Hallerstein.
Laimbeckhoven became Bishop of Nanjing (appointed 1752, consecrated at Macao in 1756) and administered the Beijing diocese from 1757. In 1775 he had to promulgate the papal suppression of his own order in China, and he died in 1787 near Songjiang.
