Re-bound with maroon coloured synthetic leather covered boards and gilt titling on the spine. New white end papers. xvi prelims, 648 text pages, followed by appendices paginated from i to lvi. 2 maps, one folding and one fold out. 44 illustrations, of which 16 are full page etchings and 28 are in text wood-cuts. CONDITION DETAILS: This was a poor copy that was rescued. The new binding was done by \"Artistic Bookbinders\" in Johannesburg about 30 or 40 years ago. This bindery no longer exists. The binding is just a plain maroon synthetic leather with titling on the spine - certainly neither \"artistic\" nor in sympathy with the age of the book. The pages have been trimmed and a few of the plates have been severely trimmed, making them smaller than the page size. A couple of soil marks. A few pen marks in the margins.
