In her examination of Coetzee\'s first six major works - Dusklands, In the Heart of the Country, Waiting for the Barbarians, Life and Times of Michael K, Foe, and Age of Iron - she comments that his is a new kind of novel, one \"that arises out of history, but also rivals history\".
As well as some edge-wear, the two-colour dustjacket is lightly chipped at the head of the spine and the upper front edge. The beige cloth boards, black lettered to the spine, are fine. A 1/2 x 1 cm label is stuck to the front free leaf of the otherwise unmarked endpapers. The contents - xiii + 258 pp of text, appendixes and index - are unmarked and undiscoloured.
This is an excellent copy of a work of criticism that is both academic and accessible.
