Gallagher may be credited with offering the first criticism of the work of the future Nobel Laureate that links it to the realities of South Africa. In her examination of Coetzee\'s first six major works - Dusklands, In the Heart of the Country, Waiting for the Barbarians, Life and Times of Michael K, Foe, and Age of Iron - she comments that his is a new kind of novel, one \"that arises out of history, but also rivals history\".

As well as some edge-wear, the two-colour dustjacket is lightly chipped at the head of the spine and the upper front edge. The beige cloth boards, black lettered to the spine, are fine. A 1/2 x 1 cm label is stuck to the front free leaf of the otherwise unmarked endpapers. The contents - xiii + 258 pp of text, appendixes and index - are unmarked and undiscoloured.

This is an excellent copy of a work of criticism that is both academic and accessible.
