Uncommon book of travel in South Africa, Ceylon, Egypt and Palestine by the Home Secretary of the London MissionarySociety - published in 1851.

Mendelssohn's South African Bibliography, v. 1, p. 65, 'An account of Mr Freeman's third visit to Africa, in 1848 ... The author was requested by the Directors to report on their stations ... and in addition to the chapters dealing with the missionary stations the volume contains much information respecting the history and geography of the countries traversed, together with a mass of useful and interesting matter concerning the native tribes of South Africa...' Theal (Catalogue of South African books...) commented that there is a great deal of information but some must be considered with care.

The map of the Orange River Sovereignty by John Arrowsmith is uncommon and historically important.

xii + 492 + 16 pages (publisher's catalogue), folding map with outline colour, 2 lithographic plates 1 as frontispiece, 5 engraved plates and 2 plans, beautifully rebacked in half leather, with original boards preserved. Some minor shelf wear; tightly bound - a very good copy.
