This well-known author left England for two months in early-1959, sailing in the Rhodesia Castle for Dar es Salaam (20 February) and returning by the Union Castle line's new flagship, the Pendennis Castle, on her first voyage from Cape Town on 27 March, "[with] exactly five weeks in which to wander down by land". The book is his perceptive and illustrated non-political diary, with many backward glances.
Sixty years later, good first edition copies of this Waugh's title are rare.
Plastic-protected dustjacket, original blue cloth boards, gilt to the spine, plain endpapers, 167 pp of text + b/w frontispiece and 9 other inserted pp of plates on art-paper with a total of 19 illustrations.
CONDITION. The dustjacket is price clipped, lightly foxed and edge-chipped, but with no material loss. The boards and binding are fine. There is a bookseller ticket on the front paste-down. The contents, including the plates, are complete and unmarked, but the page-edges and a few early and late leaves are foxed.
