How it works

Register

Andreas Sparrman was "Professor of Physic at Stockholm, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Sweden and and Inspector of its Cabinet of Natural History". He discovered one new species on his South African tour and the 9 illustrations are all related to his speciality.

"Translated from the Swedish original. With plates. The second edition, corrected. In two volumes" (bound as one).

(The translator's name is not stated.)

Full-bound in brown calf with gilt-on-red title-label on spine. Plain endpapers. Text on watermarked laid paper.

  • Vol I. xxviii + 368 pp of text. Frontispiece + 2 inserted folding engravings.
  • Vol II. viii + 356 pp of text and appendixes. Inserted folding map and 7 engravings. Notes to binder and 2 pp of publisher's announcements.

CONDITION NOTES. The leather covers are rubbed and flaked with half the title-label rubbed away. The binding, however remains tight and sound. In an undated repair by the Salesian Press of Cape Town [4039/8/52], the (sunned) endpapers were reinforced with orange binding tape and the first and last text leaves and free endpaper versos were reinforced with narrower white tape. There is the remains of a light brown damp stain on the first few leaves but the remainder of the text is undiscoloured. The folding map at the start of Vol II is reproduced in facsimile. The tissue guard of the last of the Vol II plates is loose and the plate itself is almost detached. The other tissue guards are missing. There are no owner signatures and the text, appendices and plates are unmarked.
