This is an unusually good copy of Mary Hall's first solo journey along the length of Africa "by the first woman of any nationality" - which she began in 1904 after having "visited all the other great continents of the world" - complete and in its original binding, unmarked and, except for the frontispiece tissue and 2 other leaves, unfoxed.
The blue cloth-boards, gilt lettered to the upper panel and spine, the plain endpapers, the xvi + 424 pp of text and index + 40 pp publisher's catalogue + 2 folding maps + 31 pp of inserted photographs are all in good or better condition, as detailed below.
CONDITION NOTES. The boards are extensively rubbed and there are a few small tears at the spine joins. There are binding cracks after the front endpaper and between sections G and H, J and K, and Y and Z. Although the hinges remain intact the binding has loosened slightly. There are no tears to the maps and the plates are all secure.
SUMMARY. This is a fine example of Methuen's book production standards of the period - top edge trimmed, other edges rough cut, generous margins, excellent wove and art papers - which were harnessed to a new author's lively and always interesting story and pictures.
