Second novel by the South renowned African author who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991.Controversial and banned in South Africa. Published by Victor Gollancz in 1958.
A hand-typed and signed letter by the author to her friend Thelma Gutshe is included with the book. Written from Baden in Germany on 18 May 1954, it details her travels to New York, Paris and London with her second husband Reinhold Cassirer. Cassirer and his family fled the area prior to the Second World War in order to escape Hitler’s Nazi regime.
The dust cover is in fairly to good condition with minor chipping and some areas of discolouration. The original maroon cloth cover (with gold lettering) and the text block are solid and in good condition. The text block is also discoloured along the edges.
The letter, as rare piece ephemera, is of significance.
