Arriving at Algoa Bay he proceeded to Graaf-Reinet and Grahams Town - collecting, shooting, and preserving birds. The next trip from Graaf-Reinet to Lake Ngami on which he enjoyed excellent sport meeting lions, hyenas, all kinds of antelopes and obtaining a large number of natural history specimens. [He] visited Dr. Livingstone at Kolabeng; describing the disturbed state of the country, the result of the disputes of the Boers with Secheli and of the Kaffir War of 1850. Excellent descriptions of the inhabitants and fauna of the country and many notes on the game and wild animals and birds of South Africa" (probably Frankels of Port Elizabeth).
