This detailed American map of Africa, with a decorative border, shows Africa at the height of the Scramble for Africa, soon after the infamous Berlin Conference.
The map includes an inset of St Helena, where Napolean had died in 1821, and a popular stopover between Great Britain and South Africa. There is also an inset of Nile delta, with the nearby Suez Canal which Mitchell added soon after the had it had been completed (two years after the first edition of this map was published in 1867).
Mitchell had been one of the first to engrave on steel; this map is was produced by a later technology: it is chromolithograph and was published in 1887 in Samuel Augustus Mitchell's New General Atlas.
The map is in fine condition.
