William Charles Baldwin has an honoured place in the gallery of Africa's white hunters of the nineteenth century. Arriving in Durban in 1851 he became one of this continent's great travelers, journeying between 12000 and 15000 miles with his wagons during the last three years of his wanderings. In 1860 he earned the distinction of becoming the second known European to reach the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi river.
