Demy 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. (xiv) + 269; plates. Cloth slightly rubbed and sunned; scattered foxing. Very good condition. Classic account of law enforcement in South Africa during the years preceding, and following Union. The author, leaving his home in Australia, saw the closing stages of the Anglo-Boer War in the Western Transvaal, then served in the South African Constabulary from 1908 to 1912, The Transvaal Police from 1908 to 1912, and The South African Police from 1912 to 1929, becoming Deputy Commissioner of the Force. He details the unique challenges of criminology in a country where tribalism and urban society exist side by side. The period covered includes the era of Chinese indentured labour on the Rand mines, and the Bambatha Uprising in Natal. Baden-Powell provides a Foreword.
