Edwin W.Smith was born of missionary parents of the Primitive Methodist Mission in South Africa. He was a Primitive Methodist missionary in Basutoland and in Northern Rhodesia among the Baila-Batonga. He was president of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1934) and served as editor of 'Africa', the journal of the International Institute of African Languages and Cultures.
