Frank L. WELLS (of Boston, calligrapher).
[Alderman Frederick W. Day, subject] A calligraphic memorial album from the ‘city council’ of the ‘City of Boston’ noting that they had unanimously voted to attend Day’s funeral. [Boston:] 26 September, 1900. Square quarto (8 7/8 x 8 7/8in; 226 x 226mm). 13 thin-card leaves, with entries in black with blue wash, occasional heightening in gilt, all ‘Penned by Frank L. Wells / Boston / 1900’ (see images). Bound, satin endpapers, thin board covers (stitching strong, but binding has otherwise disintegrated, small sample only of original leather used as part of the binding [see images]).
High quality work – the Art Nouveau superstar, Alphonse Mucha, looks to have been an influence? In any case, worth a re-bind. Alderman Day seems to have died before he could leave a lasting impression on Boston politics.
