The commission is for Benjamin Moodie, settler in the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, and erstwhile Justice of the Peace in Swellendam, to take affidavits. This is the original document with the Seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope.

Benjamin Moodie was a settler in the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope in 1817. He was effectively the 10th and last Laird of Melsetter and emigrated to the Colony to seek his fortunes afresh following the insolvency of the estate inherited from his father the 9th Laird. He was an active citizen, farmer, and businessman of the time, eventually obtaining a seat in the Legislative Assembly of the Colony.

Two documents. The commission proper (held inside an outer covering letter) is watermarked J. Coles 1826 with Britannia device. The covering letter is watermarked R. Munn & Co 1826 also with Britannia device.

In unusually good condition. clean, no tears or loss. age-toned as may be expected.

A transcription is available on request.
