The author's rank as "Commandant Veld Police, Eastern Transvaal" was certified on p 2 of Krige's book by H C Bredell - from the "President's House, S'Gravenhage", in 1900. Writing in 1933, when Krige's memoirs were eventually published, General Enslin prefers to describe Krige as "Acting Commandant of Theron's Scouts".

The book recounts Krige's 17 months of touring the United States using public platforms and newspapers to work up "a considerable amount of active and tangible sympathy for the Boer cause".

Krige recounts how Commandant-General Botha had instructed him to seek safety across the Portuguese border to escape being (wrongly) charged with shooting two British officers emerging from "a house with a white flag".

The first 46 of 258 pp of Krige's illustrated and lively text cover events of the war itself, while the balance details the author's extensive tour as a representative of the Boers in the United States.

No reason is given why the memoirs were published more than three decades after the events they cover, although in his foreword the author seems to suggest that American friends were also about to publish an edition of his book.

The printed blue limp covers and text are unmarked and undiscoloured.
