In two volumes, 1756, R. and J. Dodsley, Pall Mall, fourth edition, half leather, marbled boards, bookplate, 110 x 170mm, some wear to top corner of volume one, condition good.

Colley Cibber was Poet Laureate, playwright and actor-manager. His rumbustious memoir has a personal, anecdotal and rambling style which matched his brash, extroverted personality, often being cursed for his tasteless theatrical productions, shady business dealings and his fragrant opportunism.

Today the 'Apology' is an historical source of early eighteenth century culture, fashion and ideology as seen through the prism of the first significant English actor-manager.
