Annie Wolcott CROOK (c. 1856-1937, artist).

[Ants and other bugs] Collection of 12 original watercolor designs, possibly for postcards, 3 with related letters. [Toms River, NJ: April 1899 or later]. 12 original watercolor drawings on laid paper, some with integral humorous text, four with typed text beneath and all but one of these accompanied by three separate 1p. typescript letters from one ant ('Helen') to another ('Dearest Madge'), all from 'Antstown, N.J.' Condition: repairs to letters; the drawings somewhat toned, three with old pinholes to upper right blank margins, but generally excellent.

[With:]

two sketchbooks + one notebook (1. pencil drawings, pre-1881, ownership inscription 'Annie Wolcott / Chicago', 17 leaves with sketches, various trees and a view 'The Ohio River & Louisville from "The Knobs" New Albany Ind.'; 2. thirteen pencil or watercolor drawings, very sketchy; 3. ruled notebook, titled on the cover 'The Captain's Cook Book', incomplete, but  with seven  watercolor illustrated headings 'Soups and Chowders'; 'Fish'; 'Meats'; 'Game'; 'Eggs'; 'Vegetables'; 'Dessert'), and three other leaves (a lot).

The postcard designs are charming but were never produced as far as I have been able to discover. I have dated them to 'April 1899 or later' because of the card with typed text "We named the Horse Teddy because he is so Strenuous"  - this appears to be a reference to Teddy Roosevelt's famous 'Strenuous Life' speech given by him on the 19 th April 1899.

Annie Crook married Dr. George T. Crook in 1881. Her father was Charles A. Walcott of Vineland, NJ, but she was born in Boston.  Dr. and Mrs. Crook settled in Toms River, NJ. Her husband, a well-regarded dentist, was the nephew and namesake of Gen. George Crook (d.1890 in Chicago).
