This finely preserved and complete copy of the first edition of this French work on African exploration is dedicated on the half-title page to "Commander Cesar Malan, R N, with his cousin's kind regards. Alfred Bertrand. Geneva 24th May 1898".
Heavy green bevelled cloth-boards with gilt design and lettering to the upper board and gilt lettering to the spine. Marbled endpapers reinforced at the spines with matching green tape. Top edge gilt. [ix] + 331 pp of text, appendixes, list of illustrations and table of contents (at the back) + 2 inserted folding maps. Engraved author portrait inserted as tissue-protected frontispiece + 105 full-page and smaller b/w plates included in the text numbering. No ownership or other markings.
The binding remains sound, with the leaves flexible. The boards are lightly rubbed at the extremities and lower edge. The endpapers remain fine. The page gilding remains bright. Foxing is limited to the endpaper versos and their opposite leaves, the frontispiece and the backs of the maps.
The first map, in English, shows part of the Kingdom of Marutse and is reproduced with the permission of the Royal Geographical Society of London. It is based on the surveys of two British explorers (Gibbons and Reid) and that of the author of the present work, Alfred Bertrand. The survey routes are shown in red.
The second map shows the author's journey to and from Barotseland as well as Southern African rail lines.
