In his introduction, the chairman of the Transvaal Chamber of Mines, W Gemmill, notes that readers may be interested to know how the son of the famous missionary and anthropologist, the Rev Henri Junod, came to author this book; he notes that a Chamber of Mines committee arranged for a series of lectures by Junod Jr on Bantu heritage to be given to leading medical officers; and that the lectures proved so valuable to the first audience that the committee asked for them to be repeated to compound managers; and that this book was based on the transcript of five of these lectures - delivered in 1937
