In her foreword, Lorna Marshall, of Cambridge, Massachussets, writes that the author "presents a penetrating study of San rock paintings in the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa". She then discusses the use of the word "San" and her own preference for "Bushmen" and "!Kung Bushmen", writing that while it was too late for her to change she would use "San" in this book: " . . . In Believing and Seeing the study of San rock art is brought to a new stage and the present ethnology of the San is enriched and illuminated".

The author, of the University of the Witwatersrand's Department of Archaeology, inscribes this copy on the half-title: "For David Hammond-Tooke with best wishes and thanks for more things than can here be listed. David."

And in his preface the author notes that "by 1981, 3931 art sites [including important ones in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Lesotho] had been recorded by the Archaeological Data Recording Centre in Cape Town: many more are known but have not yet been recorded".

In a note on the illustrations, the author writes: "The illustrations of rock painTings in this book are black and white reproductions of the colourful originals. Full-colour reproductions would have been aesthetically preferable, but colour printing is prohibitively expensive and not essential to an understanding of the text. Unless otherwise stated in the caption, solid black represents red, the most common colour . . . "

Cream dustjacket printed in brown. Matching cloth-boards printed in brown. Plain endpapers. xiii + 151 pp of b/w illustrated text, appendix, references and index + a list of titles in the [US-edited] Studies in Anthropology series.

The dustjacket has no loss of material but is chipped, creased and torn at the head and foot. The boards are clean but the corners are lightly bumped. The contents are complete, unmarked and undiscoloured, making this a very good copy of a valuable Southern African ethnological title.
