" . . . 6 April 1861 - 6 April 1943" with three loosely inserted annual supplements, taking the work to 1 September 1946. This copy is No 88, but the size of the edition is not stated.
In his foreword, the compiler refers to the research undertaken by Dr G S Nienaber and himself from 1936 and to earlier publication in different forms, as well as to the main research sources, especially works by J J Smith and Nico S Coetzee. Over the same period, his original estimate of the number of Afrikaans books published increased from some 2000 to more than 5000.
He also mentions that an early problem was that there were Afrikaans books but few readers of them. Research in 1934 showed that only 3% of Afrikaans books in public libraries were lent out. How this has changed becomes obvious in more recently published books, but P J Nienaber's scarce compilation to 1946 remains invaluable.
Blue cloth-boards, gilt-lettered to the spine. The plain blue endpapers, which, with the title-page, are sunned around the edges, have an owner's name on the front paste-down and there are rubber stamps front aned back.
Some 80 pp of preliminary matter are followed by 844 pp of text (and a fair proprotion of advertisements) divided into an author list, a list of titles, a subject list and a chronological list of literary works.
